What happened?
A new survey found that a majority of college students agree that itâs OK to disrupt a speaker âby loudly and repeatedly shoutingâ so they canât be heard. The researcher conducting the study found this result âhighly concerning.â The nationwide survey of college undergrads found that a shocking 44 percent of students said that the First Amendment does not protect hate speech.
Whatâs a constitutional response to speech thatâs hateful?
Basically anything except physically shutting it down ⌠e.g., shouting so a speaker canât be heard or vandalizing property and assaulting people. Peacefully protesting, using your own platform for more speech and ignoring speech you disagree with are all options.
Glennâs take:
âYou might find the speech totally disgusting, totally revolting, absolutely wrong, but hate speech is indeed protected by our Constitution,â Glenn said definitively on Thursdayâs âThe Glenn Beck Radio Program.â
If you dislike a speaker, you are free simply to avoid them.
âYou have the right to not listen to speakers that offend you,â Glenn said.
