Man Shoots Son After Argument Over Kneeling NFL Players, Police Say

Father shoots son during argument over nfl players kneeling

Banning politics at the dinner table isn't just good manners, it's also a good way to stave off arguments that result in family members getting shot or going to jail.

Police in North Carolina say a father shot and wounded one of his sons after an argument on Thanksgiving about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem got heated and out-of-control.

According to Cary police, Esteban Marley Valencia, 21, was arguing with his older brother during dinner about NFL athletes protesting racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem. The father of the two boys, Jose Luis Valencia-Lamadrid, told officers that when his younger son attacked his brother, he realized he wasn't strong enough to stop them, and went to retrieve a shotgun, telling Valencia to leave.

At that point, Valencia went outside, still arguing with his father as Lamadrid took his son's bags and placed them outside on the porch.

Valencia-Lamadrid said that's when his son began throwing patio furniture, and at one point, hit him in the face with a water bottle. The 51-year-old said he had been holding the shotgun by its pistol grip, and squeezed the trigger. Valencia was shot in the leg and hand and later taken to the hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the arrest warrant, the victim had been drinking heavily throughout the day before the confrontation began.

Police arrested Valencia-Lamadrid on charges of aggravated assault. He has since bonded out of jail.

(This concludes your three-week warning to pre-emptively ban politics at any future holiday gatherings.)
