The Battle Over The Fate Of California's Last Nuclear Plant

California Governor Gavin Newsom is butting heads with environmental groups over the future of the state's last remaining nuclear power plant.

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant is set to close by 2025... But Gov. Newsom -- who supported the 2016 deal to close the plant -- now wants to keep it running to help address the state's power grid concerns.

“It only makes sense keeping Diablo open,” Marc D. Joseph, an attorney for the Coalition of California Utility Employees, said. “There is no one involved who wants to see carbon emissions in California go up.”

While nuclear power doesn't produce pollution like fossil fuels do, the radioactive waste it generates can be highly dangerous.
