TUCSON MAYOR PROCLAIMS MAY 2017
REVIVE CIVILITY MONTH
TUCSON, AZ – Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild kicks off a month of activities intended to promote civility and bridge divisions on Thursday, April 20th, at The Loft Cinema Tucson. The public is invited to attend an event featuring the mayor, Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer of NICD, Ben’s Bells founder and executive director Jeannette Maré, Professor Kate Kenski of the University of Arizona, and moderator Lupita Murillo of KVOA.
The University of Arizona’s National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD), the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson, and Ben’s Bells are working to engage the community in creating a more civil Tucson. On January 1, 2017, Mayor Rothschild signed a proclamation declaring May to be “Revive Civility Month” in Tucson.
“Communities are strongest when their members can work together toward common goals,” said Mayor Rothschild. “Civil discourse makes that more likely.”
“When we take time to really listen to someone who we perceive as different from ourselves, we see them differently and we find that we often have more in common than we might have thought,” says Dr. Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, Executive Director of the NICD. “When we find ways to work for the greater good, we demonstrate that we are a community grounded in hope and possibility and we make great things happen together.”
NICD has developed toolkits to help people find ways to promote civility, including their “Test, Talk, Revive Civility and Respect” platform and a step-by-step guide for hosting a discussion on civility in the workplace, school, or place of worship.
NICD will be supporting multiple events throughout May to promote civility. To learn and participate in the activities hosted by NICD, visit: http://nicd.arizona.edu/revive-civility-tucson.
